along a route or road network. Examples of delineation treatments include:
Retroreflective Pavement Markers (RRPMs)
Retro-reflective pavement markers, also known as ‘cats eyes’ or road studs, are usually combined with painted line marking to inform drivers of alignment changes in the road ahead. RRPMs are especially helpful during wet weather or in darkness when line marking can become obscured.
Guideposts
Guide posts aid the driver by outlining the alignment of the road ahead, particularly horizontal and vertical curves. A standard guide post is usually around one meter in height, and offset from the road by about one meter. They can be equipped with reflectors, or a coat of reflective paint, because of this, they can be extremely useful at night. In order to become a roadside hazard, they should be constructed of lightweight, durable yet frangible material. Guide posts may be required in certain locations that are prone to heavy snowfall in order to show the route of the road.
Line Marking
Painted line marking is fairly cheap. Centrelines can prevent accidental ‘drifting’ from the lane and provide discouragement of overtaking. Edge lines assist drivers in observing the road alignment and help towards reducing run-off-road crashes. Line marking is also efficient at reducing shoulder, and as such, reducing maintenance costs. Rumble strips or profiled line marking used as an edgeline or centreline and reduce and prevent head-on crashes and run-off-the-road incidents, particularly those related to driver fatigue.
