Using Signfix components to build modular signs

The family of Signfix channel extrusions are cleverly designed to build road traffic signs in a “modular” fashion. Everything from small time-plates, right up to large motorway direction signs utilising the same basic principles.

Specification

Signfix aluminium channel extrusions are produced to BS EN 755 and supplied in 6082 T6 or 6063 T6 specification. These alloys are classified as a medium strength aluminium alloy and combines excellent corrosion resistance with high structural properties. The use of this material produces signs with excellent structural rigidity and resistance to deformation at fixing points.

Surface Finish

Signfix extrusions can be supplied either unfinished (mill finish aluminium) or polyester powder coated black or aircraft grey. Although mill finish extrusion has good corrosion resistance in rural environments we would recommend the use of painted channel in marine and heavy industrial areas.

Deterring Theft

Signfix channels feature ‘Lip Lok’. designed with maximum resistance to being ‘sprung’ or forced open by vandals or thieves. Where additional security is required, vandal proof nuts can be supplied to deny the thief access. (see below) Vandal proof nuts shear off under torque to leave a dome-headed tamper proof fixing.

Medium (interlocking) Systems

SPECIFICATION 6082 T6

The medium (interlocking) channel is a highly flexible system, because you can use it on its own or it can interface with itself by means of the neat, matching locating lugs each side of the channel. Recommended for use on directional signs up to a maximum of 3 metres wide.

Accessory – Butting Plate & LipLock Bolts

Butting Plate Code: BUTPUNIV

The butting plate should always be used with Medium (Interlocking) Channels for additional security.

Butting plate complete with 2 twist-in bolts, nuts and washers

LipLock Code: BOLTM8-35LIPLOCK

For maximum pull through resistance use ‘Lip Lok’ bolt which come with nuts and washers.

LipLock & Square Head Bolts

AVAILABILITY: 3.0M 5.0M
FIXING TECHNIQUES: RIVETS, TAPES & ADHESIVES, SELF PIERCING RIVETS, STUD WELDING
FIXING BOLTS: M8 ‘LIP LOK’, M8 SQUARE HEAD
ALWAYS USE BUTTING PLATES OR G-CLIPS WITH THESE EXTRUSIONS FOR ADDITIONAL SECURITY.

Large Channel

Suitable for the very largest of directional signs. The flat vertical walls permit convenient butt joining of adjacent panels.

Accessory – Butting Plate & LipLock Bolts

Butting Plate Code: BUTPUNIV

The butting plate should always be used with Large (Interlocking) Channels for additional security.

Butting plate complete with 2 twist-in bolts, nuts and washers

Large Dovetail System

SPECIFICATION 6063 T6

The ‘Dovetail’ System is based on one of the most efficient strengthening structures known to engineers, the I-beam. Designed for the very largest traffic signs, it is the biggest and strongest of our sections with z-values at least 10% greater than any other equivalent section on the market. The two part arrangement incorporates a main channel and supporting ‘Mate’, which interlock to create the interface between the sign panels. Together they combine to provide the ultimate modular, stacking sign system. At every horizontal join in the sign structure, the ‘Dovetail’ System uses one ‘Dovetail’ channel and one ‘Mate’, compared with two complete channels of traditional design. The cost savings are considerable. And it doesn’t stop there. Because there is effectively only one channel at the horizontal interface, there need only be one fixing clip too.

Accessory – Jointing Strap, Channel Coupling, c-clip

Jointing Strap Code: LDJS

For use joining large ‘Dovetail’ extrusions together for those signs exceeding 6.8m wide and where post centres are not known.

Coupling Code: CHANCOUP

For joining large ‘Dovetail’ extrusions in signs exceeding 6.8m wide, post centres are known and do not coincide with joints.
