Buchannan Street Glasgow In 1998, Mallatite, in conjunction with Gillespies (Landscape Architect) and Land Engineering (Civil Contractor), were commissioned to design and manufacture a unique lighting support system for the Buchannan Street regeneration project.
These tapered columns came in two different heights of 10m and 18m and what made them unique were the double lantern support brackets. These were made from triple layers of hardened and tempered glass where each of the different shapes was produced using a computerised cutting system. These layers were then bonded into a laminate by the use of a resin. Careful design of the mounting was required as there could be no steel to glass contact and this was achieved by the use of soft Aluminium spacers, fibre washers and ‘O’ ring seals.
Another unique feature on the 18m poles was the use of a fibre optic generator mounted within the column and this, via fibre optic cables, fired light up to a beacon mounted on the top of the column.
Other additional features of these columns included:
- Internally illuminated stainless steel polished doors.
- Abcite over galvanised finish ensured the columns had a consistent high quality durable finish.
- Flange mounting for ease and speed of installation.
Mallatite also supervised the phased installation of the columns and the result of this careful design and planning can be seen from the top of Buchannan Street looking down towards St Enoch’s Square and the River Clyde.
