Protective Finishes for Lighting Columns
The Mallatite brochure describes our particular interest in the long term prevention of corrosion. Lighting columns, in common with other items of street furniture, are particularly vulnerable to corrosion. Underground, it can be due to soil conditions or contaminated ground water and externally, at the base, dog urine and road salt in winter can be extremely damaging. Acid rain and airborne pollutants can affect the outside of the column, whilst condensation inside can cause internal corrosion. Corrosion at ground level weakens the column and this is even more dangerous because it is often invisible. Catastrophic failure of the structure will eventually occur due to corrosion at this point.
When the cost of the bare column is compared with the total cost of installation, (column, lantern and electrics, civil work and electrical connections), a little extra spent on corrosion prevention will increase the life of the column dramatically - saving time, money and future traffic disruption. In addition, such protection reduces the need for preventative maintenance i.e. painting, so that the overall increase in the capital budget would be more than offset by savings on maintenance.
However, whilst promoting the use of fusion bonded coatings on galvanized finishes for life time durability, we acknowledge customers' individual prefernces (and financial constraints), and supply lighting columns in a number of different finishes.
