All my columns have been designed to the old standard BS 5649. Will they meet the requirements of the new EN 40 design code ?
Answer Existing columns designed to BS 5649 will be perfectly fit for purpose as EN 40 will only apply to new schemes. However it is important to amend column specifications to EN 40, stating maximum altitude and terrain category required if different from those stated in the National Application Document (PD 6547: 2004) available from the BSI.
Is there a problem with the galvanising on my columns as some parts are bright and shiny other areas appear dull and grey ?
Answer There is no problem here as the differing surface appearances of the galvanising is due to the chemical composition of the steel being treated. These columns will fully conform to the required standard EN 1461 and surfaces of the columns will “weather” over time to give a consistent appearance.
